Carbon Weighs on Everyone’s Shoulders

Posted by admin on Thursday 2 May 2013

The green movement is infiltrating all areas of industry and business in big ways, including investments. The way that companies can invest in lowering carbon footprints has found a unique approach through various carbon offset programs. Because it is virtually impossible to lower a project’s carbon footprint to zero, companies now have the ability lower the total impact of their emissions by buying carbon offsets to balance out the remaining emissions that cannot yet be eliminated. The idea is that when a company has made as many reductions as possible, they can further lessen their environmental impact by helping other companies reduce their emissions through their own investments.

Some technologies are much better suited for these types of projects than others. Projects that capture the existing carbon being released into the air are prime candidates. These include farming efforts and preservation or forest restoration. They create unlimited potential carbon offset opportunities. Farms and landfills are also uniquely suited to set up methane capturing facilities. There are dozens of ozone-depleting substance reduction projects that that make this a very lucrative initiative. In Cypress, Tx energy suppliers are able to invest in carbon offsets, reduce their emissions to practically nothing, and aid in making Texas the nation’s leader in renewable energy manufacturing.

There are various unique aspects of carbon offset programs that make them so beneficial for the green movement. They encourage companies to invest in projects that might not have the same kind of funding from any other means. The initiative is basically an incentive program for fighting the effects of global carbon emissions that we are yet to be able to eliminate. The program also requires that the effects of the offset be verifiable by non-partisan, third parties to prevent corruption. The majority of the programs set up around the nation that use carbon offsets also encourage these investments to go into permanent technologies rather than temporary solutions.

The programs in place in any given part of the country can vary. Some of the most notable systems in place include the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), EPA Climate Leaders, Climate Action Reserve (CAR), and Green-e Climate Standard. The CCX is the oldest and largest of these programs, operating in North America since 2003. They began with implementing various cap and trade regulations before developing many of the common standards for the carbon offset programs now in place. Their established protocols for verification and certification have become an industry standard.
